Tree Planting Leads to Discovery of 28,000 Ancient Coins

What started as a tree planting activity in Shunyi district of Beijing turned out to be a memorable day for the district when about 28,000 ancient coins were unearthed.

Local news reports said the coins found in Qianlingshang village can be dated to 2,100 years ago but the Shunyi cultural relics management office said a thorough study will have to be conducted to determine the age of the coins.

News reports said the coins were unexpectedly unearthed while people were planting trees. The ancient coins weigh 70 kilograms and could be worth a huge sum of money if a test will confirm that those were more than 2,000 years old.

The discovery of the 28,000 ancient coins was the biggest find in the history of Shunyi and expert archaeologists were conducting surveys to determine if there will be more interesting finds in the area.

Around the same time in Dashahe Wetland in Henan's Jiaozuo City, archaeologists discovered a well-preserved burial complex that dates back to 1600 BC to 256 BC, authorities said.

Along with the discovery of the well-preserved burial complex, archaeologists discovered several potteries, money cowries, relics, and other artifacts in the area.

Meanwhile, the heritage authority of Nanjing City in Jiangsu province has ordered an investigation on the reported destruction of an ancient tomb that dates back to 618-907 AD.

The investigation was ordered after residents complained that the ancient tomb was almost completely destroyed at a construction site.

The city's archaeologists immediately went to the area to check on the complaint and found that the tomb was indeed destroyed, with only the wall remaining.

However, the archaeologists said the ancient tomb had no archaeological value. Even so, the heritage authority of the city has ordered a temporary halt on the construction work and launched an investigation.
