A Google Camel Gives Us a Street View of an Arabian Desert

Google recently bundled an expensive camera technology called "Trekker" atop a camel to explore the Arabian desert via "street view" imagery.

The Google Maps team braved the sands of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), allowing users to see a glimpse of Liwa Desert, the largest oasis in the Arabian peninsula, from a camel's hump.

According to some reports, a 10-year-old camel named Raffia is carrying a Street View camera on its back as it roams around Liwa Oasis while being led by a guide.

"To bring this stunning desert to Street View, the team fashioned the Trekker to rest on a camel, which gathered imagery as it walked," said Najeeb Jarrar, Google's product marketing manager for the Middle East and North Africa.

With the Street View cameras and camel, the team captured panoramic views and authentic imagery of the fragile environment for internet users worldwide.

The tech giant hopes the street view images gives people "a glimpse of what it may be like to travel the desert as caravan merchants have for the past 3000 years," Jarrar wrote on the official Google Maps blog.

Through the Google's Street View photos, various parts of the Liwa Desert, some of the large sandy dunes, a wide shot of part of the oasis and a glimpse of some of the local residents were shown to public.
