Electronics manufacturer HTC unveiled Wednesday its new smartphone, the Desire Eye, a smartphone that can take videos and pictures with its two 13 megapixel cameras.

The handset was also accompanied by a small handheld camera dubbed the "Re."

"We believe what you hear about today marks a new milestone for the evolution of HTC," CEO Peter Chou said. "This is just the beginning about reimagining HTC."

The Desire Eye smartphone will be the platform the company uses to show off its new "Eye Experience" software, which lets its users take pictures by saying "cheese," or just steadying the phone for a photograph. A user may also start recording a video by saying "action."

HTC's One phones will receive the "Eye Experience" technology as an update.

The Re camera, which is shaped like a periscope, has only a few buttons and no viewfinder. This because the company focused on a simple design for the device, according to the HTC president for the Americas region, Jason Mackenzie. The camera is capable of taking 1,920 x 1,080 pixel videos and 16 megapixel photographs.

The Desire series of cheap smartphones has been gradually increasing in popularity in the United States since the handsets were unveiled in February at the Mobile World Congress.

Meanwhile, HTC is set to launch the HTC Desire 612, which is exclusive Verizon Wireless subscribers, on Friday.

The entry-level smartphone is a variant of the Desire 610, which is already being sold by mobile service provider rival AT&T. It's similar to an HTC take on Motorola's Moto G LTE.

The HTC Desire 612 sports a 4.7-inch screen with a resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 chipset, an Adreno 305 graphics processing unit and a 1.2 GHz Cortex-A7 quad-core processor running Android 4.4 KitKat.

It has a 2,040 milliampere hour battery, a gigabyte worth of random access memory, 8 GB of built-in memory, a microSD card slot capable for expandable memory, an 8 MP rear camera with an LED flash, a 1.3 megapixel front facing camera and dual front-facing speakers.

As a unique feature, Verizon has given the Desire 612 support for the company's XLTE network, which equates to faster data transfer speeds for users.
