Although Robert Downey Jr. has made an explosive comeback with the "Ironman" movies, the actor shared that superhero movies are showing signs of "fraying around the edges".

Downey stated that he believed that superhero movies are getting quite old, especially considering that around five or seven superhero-themed movies came out just last summer.

"I feel that they are critiqued by a different metric to any other movie. Right, [that metric is box office], but also they are more forgiven because they operate on a different frequency. It's like a bunch of really good dancers and you're looking for the one who keeps changing her leg warmers. They make a lot of money," he commented.

Superhero movies do make a lot of money, and whether or not the actor was being too negative or simply having a bad day, insiders say that although it isn't a done deal yet, Marvel executives are looking forward to bringing Tony Stark a.k.a Ironman to "Captain America 3".

Downey is said to be in final negotiations for the third installment of "Captain America" scheduled to hit theaters on May 16, 2016.

As Marvel fans and viewers familiar with the Marvel movies know, Captain Steve Rogers and Tony Stark don't particularly get along and, are constantly at odds against one another. Marvel seeks to put this at the forefront as it intends to bring its flagship "Civil War" comic book storyline to the big screen.

In the said storyline penned by Mark Millar of "Kick-Ass" fame, the Cap and Ironmanare at odds over the Superhero Registration Act which forces all vigilantes to register their real identities with the government. While Stark is in favor of the bill, Captain America and those who follow him are not, sparking a significant feud and struggle between the two iconic superheroes.
