Thanks to a new battery invented by researchers in Singapore, electric cars could be charged in as little as 15 minutes.

The battery charges up to 70 percent of its capacity in just two minutes of charging. It's still in a prototype stage, however, but will be scaled up from its current small size.

Apart from the rapidity of its charging capabilities, the battery also has a long life span. The inventors at the Nanyang Technological University commented the battery could be used for as long as 20 years.

This means the battery can have 10,000 charging cycles.

The inventors believe their invention holds great possibilities for electric cars since its quick recharging capability allows drivers to be on the road longer.

Of course, this invention also has major implications for any type of battery-powered electronic devices like mobile phones and laptops that might be fully charged in a matter of minutes using a spin-off of this thecnology.

Traditional batteries use natural or synthetic graphite to construct the anode, the positively charged electrode by which electrons exit an electrical device.

Researchers replaced graphite with a new gel material made from titanium dioxide, which is found commonly in soil.

Afterwards, they turned the titanium dioxide into nanotubes thinner than a human hair.

"With our nanotechnology, electric cars would be able to increase their range dramatically with just five minutes of charging, which is on par with the time needed to pump petrol for current cars," said Chen Xiaodang, one of the developers of the battery.

He adds that the new battery will also lessen waste since it can be used for a longer time.
