Elderly British Woman Forced to Abandon Husband in Turkish Hospital After Insurance Co. Refuses to Pay £30,000 Bill

The 91-year-old wife of a retired policeman was forced to leave her husband at a hospital in Turkey after receiving a hospital bill worth £30,000.

Dennis Gittins was on a Turkish holiday with his wife of 50 years, Jen, when he collapsed at a jewellery store.

According to Mrs. Gittins, her husband was placed on life support after the hospital staff found that he had suffered a stroke and was in a coma.

The Express reported that she went to visit her husband every day from September 29, when he was brought in, until she was forced to go home on October 8, when she ran out of money to pay the hospital.

Mrs. Gittins said their insurance company refused to pay the hospital bill and she isn't allowed to bring her husband back to the United Kingdom until the £30,000 bill is settled.

The hospital bill is accumulating an additional £1,500 per day.

"I just wanted him to be in a hospital here so I could visit him," Mrs. Gittins said, adding that she didn't have the money that the hospital required to release her husband.

"I don't know what to do," she said.

According to her, she wouldn't have left her husband in Turkey if she still had money to pay for her stay in the country.

Intana, the Medicare company affiliated with Ageas life insurance, refused to pay Mr. Gittins' hospital bill because they claim that he did not disclose that he had already had a stroke when he applied for his coverage.

However, his wife insisted that the insurance company was told of her husband's previous condition.

Mrs. Gittins said her husband had suffered from a stroke in May but was cleared to travel.

Meanwhile, a spokesperson from a Foreign Office said they knew about what happened and will provide "consular assistance" to Mr. Gittins.
