In an interview with MMA Fighting, Werdum explained what led to his near-death experience.

He recounts that the people got a gasoline generator to provide power. Usually, the generators were left outside of the house, but this one was left inside instead.

After training one day, Werdum and his team had dinner and went straight to bed. However, they had left the generator on the whole night as no one told them to turn it off before sleeping.

He awoke in the middle of night with a huge headache and nausea. He couldn't get out of bed. It turns out that everyone was feeling the same.

Werdum's brother was able to get out of bed and turn off the generator.

They made their way to the hospital, vomiting and with severe bouts of diarrhea. The doctor said that if the generator was not turned off in two hours, everybody would have died.

"Imagine the headlines: 'Werdum moves his camp to Mexico and dies with his whole team.' We were searching for a breath of fresh air and almost died from carbon monoxide poisoning," he recalled in laughter.

Werdum was recently a head coach for the current season of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF): Latin America, opposite Velasquez.

His last win was a dominating performance against Travis Browne that skyrocketed him to a title fight.
