It will be available Nov. 3 for Nexus 6 and Nexus 9, aiming to compete against its rival's current mobile operating system supremacy. While Android has a bigger market share, Apple iOS has always been more lucrative.

Google has already confirmed its next major Android update is called Android Lollipop 5.0. People say the operating system's software driving force is its new Material Design, which revamps the Android look into a cleaner, more fluid design.

App developers can have the Android L and iOS 8 immediately.

The Apple iOS 8 has been available to developers since June 2 through the company's developer connection website. Meanwhile, Android L has been available to developers since June 26 through the Android developer website.

While Apple's website costs £59 annually, the Android website doesN't cost anything. Both dev editions need compatible devices.

Apple unleashed several new features for the Mac OS X and iOS operating systems at the WWDC 2014.

Apple also refreshed the iOS design from skeumorphic to flat in iOS 7. The iOS 8 isn't expected to come with a major visual overhaul.

Material Design has elements from previous designs including gradients, sliding and layered tiles and shadows.
