WTA Tournament of Champions: Cibulkova, Suarez Navarro Wins First Round-Robin Match

Second seeded Dominika Cibulkova and third seeded Carla Suarez Navarro won their first round-robin match at the Garanti Koza WTA Tournament of Champions in Bulgaria on Tuesday.

Acapulco Open champion Cibulkova kicked off her first round-robin play in Group Sredets as she defeated hometown wild card entry Tsvetana Pironkova in two straight sets 6-3 7(8)-6(6) in a match that lasted an hour and 51 minutes.

"I played pretty well today, so I am happy with my game," Cibulkova said. "I felt comfortable with my tactics, and when I use the right tactics, I play well. The tie-break was very close in the end, but I managed to cross the finish line."

Also in Group Sredets, Suarez Navarro who cruised her first match against Andrea Petkovic in straight sets 6-0 6-4.

The 26-year-old Spaniard easily took the first set as she broke the German three times to treat Petkovic to a "bagel".

"I played really well today," Suárez Navarro said. "The first match is never easy, and I'm happy with my performance.

Petkovic, 27, tried to stage a comeback in the second set as she went head-to-head in breaks with the Portugal Open champion, exchanging two consecutive breaks but Suarez Navarro eventually grabbed an opportunity for a third break to finish the match in an hour and 21 minutes.

Wild card entry Flavia Pennetta and Alize Cornet also saw action for Group Serdika on Tuesday as the third seeded Italian easily won her first round-robin match against the Frenchwoman in two sets 6-1 6-2 in a match that lasted an hour and 11 minutes.

Top seeded Ekaterina Makarova will square off against Hobart International champion Garbine Muguruza on Wednesday in their opening match in Group Serdika.

The Tournament is the year-ending championships of WTA's International series which invites the six highest-ranked International-level title winners, as well as two wildcards, to the Bulgarian capital Sophia and compete for a share of US$ 750,000.
