Republican Sen. Mitch McConnell has released a new campaign ad where he channels Jean Claude van Damme and surrounds himself with bloodhounds, a lighthearted spot very much different from most being aired today.

The new ad, titled "Commercials," is a nod to McConnell's old ad "Bloodhounds" when he first ran for Senate in 1984 and was up against Democrat incumbent Walter Dee Huddleston.

The 1984 ad implied Huddleston's absence in the enactment of U.S. policies such as social security, budget and defense. It was one of McConnell's more effective ads that won him the seat then, Politico relayed.

In the new version, the Kentucky incumbent was seen brainstorming with a group of campaign experts for his next spot. They first suggest he appear between two trucks.

That seems dangerous, McConnell responds after which a shot reminiscent of a car company's truck ad featuring Jean Claude van Damme appears.

The experts then propose using a talking baby but the idea was shot down by the senator who claimed the idea had already been used before.

Finally, a man closely resembling Steven Spielberg and wearing a "Famous Director" hat suggested using bloodhounds. McConnell had seemed unenthusiastic with the idea at first, wondering whether saying "Mitch fights for Kentucky" would be enough for voters.

In the end, the senator agrees with the man's idea. The spot ends with a cheery note as he sits in a chair surrounded by eight bloodhounds.

The people of Kentucky need a breather from all the "relentless attack ads," said McConnell's campaign adviser John Ashbrook, adding that they wanted to "lighten things up a bit."

The Kentucky Senate race remains tight as it heads into its final week. A Bluegrass poll found the GOP Minority Leader in the lead 1 percent over Democratic opponent Alison Lundergan Grimes.

While public polls have shown McConnell holding a 3 to 8 percent lead, most of the figures are still within the polls' margins of error, The Courier-Journal noted.
