Samsung Loses Two Patent Infringement Cases Filed by Apple

A California court ordered Samsung to pay Apple US$119.6 for infringement of two Apple patents but cleared the South Korean company of wrongdoing in three other patent suits.

The eight-person jury reached the decision Friday after weeks of deliberation on the case where Apple had sought US$2.2 billion in damages from Samsung for copying certain features of its products.

Samsung insisted that it did not copy Apple's patents, and even if Samsung's products had features similar to that of Apple's, lawyers said the similarities were too trivial to have influenced customers to buy one over the other.

Samsung lawyers argued that Apple was just using the court to regain what it has lost in the market.

They said Apple took the legal battle to prevent Samsung products, which run on Google's popular Android software, from seizing a yet larger market share from Apple's iphone and tablet products.

The five patent infringement cases involve iPhone features such as search technology and the slide-to-unlock key, which are also present in Samsung phones such as the Galaxy-S III.

Friday's court ruling did not say if Samsung's Galaxy line would be banned from the market as prayed for by Apple.

Apple and Samsung's series of legal battles started in 2012 when jurors awarded Apple $930 million in damages in a trial in the same court in San Jose, California. But the Court refused to issue a permanent injunction against the sale of Samsung phones in the United States.

Industry observers said Apple's intention to curb the rapid growth of Android-based phones did not materialize as the jury did not grant the injunction it was seeking for.

Apple reacted to Friday's verdict saying that the ruling reinforces its stance that "Samsung willfully stole our ideas and copied our products."
