World Cup 2014 Brazil Update: Fan Killed by Toilet Bowl in Football Violence

A football enthusiast succumbed to severe head injuries after he was hit by a toilet bowl dropped by another fan during a Brazilian football match in the city of Recife, one of the hosts of the World Cup Brazil 2014.

The toilet bowl was dropped by another fan from an upper tier inside the Arruda stadium in northeastern Brazil when violence broke out during the game. Three other persons were injured, Brazilian authorities said.

The toilet bowl was taken from one of the stadium's toilets, authorities said, although it was not reported if the fan who dropped the toilet bowl was arrested.

The death of 26-year-old Paulo Ricardo Gomes da Silva once again raises fresh concerns that Brazil is not fully ready to host the World Cup and questions the country's ability to guarantee safety of spectators and players during the much-awaited game.

The World Cup Brazil 2014 will be held in 12 cities around Brazil from 12 June to 13 July. However, World Cup organizers said three of the 12 venues have not been fully completed despite the 2013 deadline.

The violence inside the Arruda stadium took place just within kilometers of the World Cup venue Arena Pernambuco stadium.

The Supreme Tribunal of Sporting Justice in Brazil immediately ordered the closure of the Arruda stadium pending an investigation by authorities.

Joelma da Silva, the victim's mother, said she was saddened by the death of her son and urged authorities to give justice to Paulo by arresting the suspect who threw the toilet bowl.

It was not the first time that violence occurred in various World Cup venues in Brazil within six months. In December, scores were hurt when a riot broke out during a Brazilian top-flight match between Vasco da Gama and Atletico Paranaense in Joinville City.

In February, a football fan was killed by iron bars-wielding hooligans in the city of Sao Paulo. It was followed by the shooting of three football fans outside the Arena das Dunas World Cup stadium in Natal.

The violence in Arruda occurred just a few days after football fans criticized another World Cup venue, the Arena da Amazonia, for its failure to address rowdy crowd and the heavy traffic around the arena during a Copa do Brazil match.

The Brazilian government earlier announced that it will deploy a total of 170,000 policemen and security officers, including secret service men, during the World Cup Brazil 2014.
