A lawyer for the University of Miami's former pitching coach recently said that the New York Yankees superstar Alex Rodriguez admitted to federal investigators that he was using steroids supplied by a clinic in South Florida while he was playing in the Major League Baseball (MLB).

The lawyer who released the statement is Attorney Frank Quintero Jr. He represents Lazaro "Laser" Collazo in his defense against charges of conspiracy to distribute performance enhancing drugs (PEDs).

Quintero told the Associated Press that the third baseman confessed to using steroids to the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), who provided documents to defense lawyers.

According to a report from the Miami Herald, Rodriguez initially met with the DEA last January. In exchange for immunity from prosecution, Rodriguez offered that he did in fact use banned substances between late 2010 and October 2012.

He added that they were supplied by Anthony Bosch, owner of the Biogenesis of America clinic in Coral Gables.

During his time with the Yankees - beginning in 2004 - Rodriguez denied the use of any PED. However, the three-time AL Most Valuable Player (MVP) acknowledges in 2009 that he used PEDs when he was with Texas from 2001-2003.

Commissioner Bud Selig had initially suspended Rodriguez for 211 games in August 2013 for violating the drug agreement and labor contract. The penalty was cut to the 2014 season in January by arbitrator Fredric Horowitz.

In response to these, Rodriguez proclaimed his innocence and tried suing in federal court. He withdrew the suit though and accepted the penalty not soon after.

It was also reported that Bosch told the DEA of Rodriguez paying the steroid use of 20 Biogeneses customers to keep the owner from talking about his involvement.

A total of 14 MLB players have been suspended after the sport's investigation into Biogenesis. However, none have been charged with crimes.
