Blizzard Entertainment has announced Overwatch at Blizzcon 2014, a new six-on-six multiplayer online battle arena shooter, reportedly the revamp to the axed MMO Titan.

The announcement hit a big audience at Blizzcon, filled with fans of Blizzard's StarCraft II, World of Warcraft, Hearthstone, Diablo III and Heroes of the Storm, collectively making up a huge part of the PC gaming audience.

Overwatch will be the first game from Blizzard in a decade to add new IP. Hearthstone and Heroes of the Storm both take references to previous games like Warcraft and Diablo, allowing Blizzard to pull from its large inventory of characters and designs.

At launch, Overwatch will contain 12 heroes - enough to fit a 6 vs 6 battle. Blizzard will add more as the game progresses. The most prominent character trait right now is guns, with only two melee heroes and one mage-style hero.

The gameplay is different for each hero, some have high mobility, and others rely on turrets or mines in order to trap their opponents. Blizzard wants to create a fluid experience where each team has different weak and strong points, with a similar design to Team Fortress 2.

Blizzard will add several maps and a few game-modes, although information is scarce at the moment. The open beta is in launch right now, to sign up go to Battle.net/overwatch. The overload might mean a few months before you get involved.

This is a huge announcement for Blizzard, because it signifies a new IP filled with new heroes, and a new team-based game to compete against the trojan horse Team Fortress 2.
