After nearly a week of barreling the Philippines Seas as it moved north off the coast of Japan, Typhoon Nuri lashed the Aleutian Islands of Alaska.

Weather forecasters predict that Nuri is expected to set off a polar vortex that will push down frigid air into the south across Canada and the mainland United States, possibly bringing temperatures to below 15 degrees Centigrade.

Friday morning, Typhoon Nuri with sustained winds of 112 kilometers per hour and gusts of 155 kilometers per hour was spotted in the remote Shemya islands, shuttering at least 120 people into their homes.

The island serves as the U.S. military's Earaeckson Air Station - home to the U.S. frontline radar monitoring stations.

Personnel at the station reported seeing electric poles swaying to howling winds. Early Friday evening, with wind speeds slowing down, military personnel were ordered to survey the island to inspect any damage.

Typhoon Nuri will finally disintegrate once it moves into the Bering Sea this Sunday but will still have its last hurrah by fuelling an off-season frigid air into the United States.

U.S. Weather Service's meteorologist Jason Ahsenmacher said Nuri will dissolve but  "It's going to slowly weaken all the way through Sunday," and "It's going to be a very slow process."

Gale warning was issued for vessels in the region, including large fishing boats and tankers, as waves are expected to be as high as 15 meters.

Waves could be as high as 50 feet, prompting ships and fishing vessels to get out of the storm's path or seek protected harbors.

Forecasters predict that Nuri will be more intense compared to 2012's Super Storm Sandy, the worst to ever hit North America killing 182 people and causing some US$65 billion in damages.

Forecasters predict chills and snow sweeping across the mainland, bringing an early winter weeks before Thanksgiving.
