Hans Rudolf (H.R.) Giger, the mastermind behind some of the creepiest and most surreal 'biomechanics' and alien visuals in Hollywood, had died in Zurich at the age of 74.

The artist behind the sci-fi movie Alien died from injuries he sustained during a fall in Zurich, according to NPR. A representative from the H.R. Giger Museum in Gruyeres, Switzerland, relayed the news to the AP.

All throughout his career that lasted for decades, Giger depicted humanity's close relationship with machines in a visual representation that shows a seamless and sometimes creepy blending of the two. Wired magazine described his works as a melding of "sex, tech, legend."

Giger's unique craft helped him bag an Oscar for his designs on the movie Alien.

According to Wired, Giger grew up in one of the most beautiful places in the world. But his childhood also hid strange creatures that gave him panic attacks and nightmares.

Giger was also a concept designer for movies such as Species, Poltergeist 2, Dune, and Batman Forever, io9 reports. His design for the Batmobile, however, was not used.

The AP said the Swiss artist also designed album covers such as that of Brain Salad Surgery of rock band Emerson, Lake and Palmer, which featured a human skull enclosed in a machine.

In an interview with All Things Considered, Giger's publisher and friend James Cowan said his nightmares were the main inspiration for his work. He said his friend's passion centered on surrealism.

Cowan recounted that one of the turning points of Giger's life was when his mother gave him a postcard of a Dali painting when he was just a boy. That postcard had forever left an impression on the alien artist.

In 2013, Giger was inducted into the Science Fiction and Fantasy Hall of Fame. Cowan said that behind those darkly themed artworks, Giger had a kind heart.
