Brazilian teenager Marcel Fernandes Filho has become the new Guinness World Record holder for the fastest texter by clocking in a time of just 18.19 seconds.

It all began in 2009 when the then-13-year-old Brazilian's Dell desktop monitor broke down and he smashed the device with a hammer in his frustration. With no cash to buy a new personal computer, he started using his iPhone 3GS for every computer-related work he needed to do, according to CNET.

To become the fastest texter in the world, one has to be able to perfectly type a long and complicated sentence set by the organizing body of the contest. Such a sentence contains all the letters of the alphabet and is difficult enough for the average human typist.

Being able to type the whole sentence is not enough; the record contender must be able to get the correct spelling and punctuation to win the title. The previous record holder was a 15-year-old who was able to perform the texting stunt at Microsoft within 18.44 seconds.

Filho, who is now 17 years old, was able to test his texting skills in New York and managed to gain a record time of just 18.19 seconds.

At the time, Filho was wearing a t-shirt with a "Fleksy" label. Because of that, some thought that this was a sponsored event.

Fleksy is actually the brand of a touchscreen keyboard that the Brazilian teen used during his shot at the Guinness World Record. He said he first discovered Fleksy via Flipboard in 2012 and was instrumental in his 2014 quest for fame in the texting realm.

Filho does not want people to think that because he holds the world record in texting, he spends all his time on his phone. He is actually enrolled in college and is studying physics in UFSC, a school located in the southern region of Brazil.
