The White House told Vietnam to resolve territorial disputes with China in a peaceful manner instead of threats.

White House press secretary Jay Carney said that the issues regarding territories involving Beijing should be resolved through diplomatic dialogues to preventing any harmful responses from any country toward China.

China Times cited an Asian diplomat saying that the United States should take a stand against Beijing and persuade Hanoi to solve the anti-Chinese protests lodged by its people. The diplomat also said Asian countries have been worried as they witness China trying to push its own interests by provoking next-door countries.

On the other hand, Chinese President Xi Jinping said during the Chinese People's Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries (CPAFFC) conference that the people of China have “no gene for invasion”.

He also added that the people of China will not follow the “might is right” logic. Furthermore, he said that Beijing would firmly stick to peaceful development and would like to strengthen its position regarding world peace with other nations.

Meanwhile, the US Seventh Fleet positioned in Japan hoped to boost American ties with Hanoi’s naval division and increase its visit to Vietnam, according to the fleet’s spokesperson, William Marks.

Currently, the United States navy is only allowed to dock three vessels a year in the port of Vietnam. The US fleet has not altered its port agreements with Hanoi following the Sino-Vietnamese tension.

Geo-political analysts say Vietnam does not have enough resources to combat the Chinese military. It also has no defense agreement with the US and its economy is strongly dependent on China. This, they say, has left the Hanoi government with no choice but to let its people take to the streets in protests.

In 2013, the exports of Vietnam to China were recorded at $13.3 billion, comprising 10 percent of its total exports. In the same period, Vietnam’s imports from China comprised 28 percent of its total imports valued at US$37 billion.
