The United Nations will be offering an exhibit which will feature Chinese Farmers' Art at its headquarters in New York from May 21-23.

Titled "World Mind-China Dream", the art show introduces 80 folk paintings selected from various regions across China by the Chinese Peasant's Calligraphy and Painting Research Association.

The show is sponsored by the Permanent Mission of the People's Republic of China, the International Health & Environment Organization, Chinese Peasants Calligraphy and Painting Research Association and the Dongfeng County People's Government, Jilin Province, China.

The Chinese Farmers' Art genre is marked by its rustic and often eccentric portrayal of rural life in China and has become increasingly popular in recent years.

However, Chinese Farmers' Art has a long history, having started in the 1950s when communist rule encouraged rural communities to engage in making art.

Since then, Chinese Farmers' Art has been exhibited around the globe although this is the first time the UN will be featuring this genre in an exhibit.

The works of art are created by country artists with little to no training and are done mostly with watercolors on rough paper.

Although chosen from various regions, the rural art scene in China dominates in three in particular - Jilin and Shanghai Fengxian, Jinshan District, Shaanxi Huxian - and many of the self-taught artists featured issue from these counties.

The themes range from complex to abstract and China's rich mythology is also present in several of the works.

A benefit auction at Gianguan Auctions New York on Sunday May 25th will follow the "World Mind-China Dream" exhibit and will auction off the artwork on view at the May 21-23 shows.

Gianguan Auctions New York is the only fully Chinese-American operated and owned auction house in New York City.

Proceeds from the auction will benefit Farmers' Art communities in China.
