Kobe Bryant Becomes First Player in NBA History with 30,000 Points, 6,000 Assists


Los Angeles Lakers star shooting-guard Kobe Bryant made history last night against the Toronto Raptors, becoming the first player in NBA history to record more than 30,000 points and 6,000 assists.


Bryant, a 16-time All-Star, seems to have a habit of making history against the Raptors. First it was his historic 81-point game, which is the current franchise record for the Lakers, and the second-highest point-total in a game following only Wilt Chamberlain's 100 points against the Knicks in 1962.

Bryant achieved a huge milestone against Toronto again, and should help discredit the stigma of Bryant being a selfish player who rarely passes the ball, which is how many fans and analysts have portrayed him.

"It's a huge honor," Bryant said after the game about the milestone. "It means I pass more than people say."

Not only did Bryant reach his 6,000th assist, but he did so in typical superstar fashion finishing the game with a triple double of 31 points, 11 rebounds and 12 assists to close out the the best team in the East.

Over his entire career, the 36-year-old Bryant has averaged 5.4 assists per game. And while many point toward star players such as Shaquille O'Neal having an impact on Bryant's assist total, Kobe averaged over six assists per game last season for a lottery team while still holding his high scoring output.

To put that into perspective, San Antonio Spurs' Tony Parker - regarded as one of the best point-guards in the league - has only averaged six assists respectively over his entire career.

"He's just an amazing basketball player. That's the bottom line. He's had an unbelievable career. He's still going pretty strong," Lakers coach Byron Scott said. "There's a lot left in that tank, it's obvious. His accomplishments are just fantastic. To watch him continue to compete the way that he does at this level is remarkable."
