According to Williams, she is reading and continuously learning about the character and she learned that the character was always being played by women.

It all started on the "Peter Pan" first stage play in England and ever since then the production always chose women to play the role of the boy who never grow up. Slate cites a section in "J.M. Barrie and the Lost Boys: The Real Story Behind Peter Pan".

It stated that it was Charles Frohman, a Broadway producer who suggested that a woman should play the role of Peter Pan because having a boy as Peter Pan can affect the rest of the kids in the ensemble. Another reason is the English law stated that children below 14 years old cannot work after 9 p.m. In 1904, a woman was cast as the Peter Pan.

Aside from Williams, other famous actresses who played the role of Peter Pan are Sandy Duncan, Mary Martin and Cathy Rigby.

Williams told PEOPLE that she did not have a hard time playing Peter Pan because it feels very natural to her and it is a huge delight to be able to play a boy. For her, it is one of the greatest privileges for an actor.  She also added that the character has a history and for some it is maybe boring at the beginning because it is just about the labor code.
