Director Roberto Orci Drops Out as Director of New "Star Trek" Flick

Deadline reports that Roberto Orci has decided to forego his role as director of the third film in the rebooted Star Trek series. He was supposed to take over reins of the film from JJ Abrams who is now currently working on the new "Star Wars" flick.

Currently, the new "Star Trek" film has no director.

The reason for the said fallout was a reported disagreement over the script. Orci was writing the screenplay with Patrick McKay and John D. Payne.

Although Orci has given up what would have been his directorial debut, he has decided to remain as a producer.

Previously, Orci was working alongside longtime creative partner Alex Kurtzman on the screenplay, but the two had supposedly ended their partnership in 2014.

Orci and Kurtzman were famed for their work on the "Transformers" franchise, as well as "Mission Impossible III".

Paramount and Skydance are said to be looking into several directors to take over, including Edgar Wright, director of "Shaun of the Dead" who ironically stepped away from another superhero/action flick, "Ant-Man" due to creative differences with Marvel.

Wright is reportedly an avid fan of sci-fi flicks, and is a close friend and collaborator of Simon Pegg who currently stars as Scotty in the new "Star Trek" franchise. The said director also guest-directed one of the 2120 shots in "Star Trek: Into Darkness" while he was visiting the set.

The third installment of the new "Star Trek" franchise is scheduled for release in 2016, just in time for the 50th anniversary of the series.

Rumor has it that the film will delve more into space adventures, rather than interpersonal relationships like the first two films. William Shatner will also more likely make an appearance in the flick as Captain Kirk, although it is suggested that it might be more of a cameo role rather than a pivotal one.
