iPhone 6S Primary Chip Manufacturer Will Be Samsung

Samsung will be the primary manufacturer for the iPhone 6S.

Apple and Samsung have not been on the best terms since their patent battles started in 2011. Even with the disagreements, Samsung has supplied the majority of chips for iPhones and iPads.

Recently, Apple dropped the Rockstar Consortium after spending $2.4 billion acquiring the patent rights. It also announced it would rethink the way it uses patents, bridging the divide between the two largest smartphone makers.

Samsung is back in Apple's good books, with a new report claiming it is now the primary manufacturer for the iPhone 6S A9 chip. Samsung previously only manufactured 30 percent of the chips for the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus.

The South Korean manufacturer will be responsible for most of the manufacturing effort, with help from Apple's Taiwanese partners. The number of requested A9 chip units was not disclosed.

Apple's new A9 chip will feature a new 14 nanometer FinFET technology, moving away from the 20 nanometer industry standard. The new chip should hog 35 percent less energy, while offering 20 percent more performance-it should also be 15 percent smaller than the A8.

It is unclear when the iPhone 6S will launch, some rumors suggest an early spring 2015 release, to go alongside the Apple Watch.

Launching the iPhone 6S this early would give Apple enough time to work on the iPhone 7 for the second half of 2015. It should also increase Apple's overall iPhone sales by at least 30 percent.

Apple will reportedly launch the iPhone 7 alongside a smaller 4-inch iPhone in the second half of 2015. This would put five potential iPhones on the market, the most Apple has ever sold in one year.

Even though Samsung may not like working with an employer who is also suing them, Apple's contracts are extremely lucrative to Samsung. The manufacturing of the Apple chip keeps Samsung's chip division in profit, according to some analysts.
