Warner Bros. Delays Release of "Jupiter Ascending"

On Tuesday, just six weeks prior to the originally slotted July release, Warner Brothers announced that the latest film from the Wachowski siblings called "Jupiter Ascending" would be released in February of next year instead.

According to a spokesman for the studio, the eight-month delay is due to unfinished visual effect in the sci-fi film.

However, the movie, which stars Channing Tatum and Mila Kunis, was met with negative feedback after the trailer debuted in December and pre-release audience surveys showed that "Jupiter Ascending" would most likely have a weak opening. There has been some speculation that WB would prefer to release the film at a time when there is less competition from big summer blockbusters, and February 2015 may seem perfect.

In "Jupiter Ascending" Mila Kunis plays the part of an Earth-bound janitor who meets an interplanetary warrior (Tatum). The film reportedly has over 2,000 special effect shots alone.

Brother-sister duo Andy and Lana Wachowski are perhaps most well-known for their three "Matrix" franchise films and arguably have seen little success since finishing the sci-fi action series.

Their following two films, "Speed Racer" and "Cloud Atlas", received lackluster responses worldwide and flopped in North America.

WB also hasn't fared too well with recent movie releases. The studio's "Edge of Tomorrow", starring Tom Cruise, has received underwhelming feedback on the home front, although it is hoped that the film will pick up once it hits theatres overseas.

That's not to say that movie buffs should expect the worst. Dan Fellman, the studio's president of domestic distribution, pointed to "World War Z" as a prime example of success despite numerous delays.

The Paramount movie, which starred acting veteran Brad Pitt, was surrounded by negative buzz from the get-go and had to push back its release date six months. However, when it was finally released, "World War Z" grossed $540 million worldwide.
