'Beetlejuice' Sequel is 'Closer Than Ever' Says Tim Burton

It seems a sequel to the 1988 classic comedy- horror film Beetlejuice may see the light of day and could become hit theaters sooner than expected, according to the film's original director Tim Burton.

Talking with entertainment media site IGN promoting his latest film Big Eyes, Burton mentioned that he's certainly planning on bringing back the bio-exorcist for a sequel and that a script has already been written, but is only on board if Michael Keaton is able to reprise his role. Keaton's career is currently undergoing its own revival as the actor has received critical acclaim for his performance in this year's Birdman.

"There's only one Beetlejuice, and that's Michael," said Burton. "There is a script, and I would love to work with him again. I think there is now a better chance than ever... I miss that character. There's something that's cathartic and amazing about it. I think it's closer than ever."

Beetlejuice is about a recently deceased couple who become ghosts and are forced to spend eternity confined within their home. The couple then collaborates with an obnoxious ghost named Beetlejuice in an effort to scare away the home's new inhabitants, but the trust in the devious ghost causes a number of problems.

Although complete details on a potential Beetlejuice 2 is currently unknown, it's said that the film will not be a remake of the 1988 classic, but would instead be an actual sequel set 27 years later. The script was reportedly written by Seth Granhame-Smith, the writer behind Abraham Lincoln: VampireHunter as well as Pride and Prejudice.

After Michael Keaton is on board, the next step would likely be to bring back Winona Ryder who played the character Lydia Deetz. But that shouldn't be an issue, as Ryder has already expressed interest in reprising the role in a sequel recently.

The idea of a Beetlejuice sequel hasn't gone over too well with Burton in the past. He was approached to do another film in 1990, but wasn't interested and quickly turned it down. Now after nearly three decades it seems that's going to change and actually begin production for the film once all the pieces fall in place.
