Even if Google and Apple continue to take their battles to a whole new level, there's no denying the latter is doing much better than the other tech giant. The fact Apple's rolled out CarPlay, a system designed specifically for automobiles, doesn't help Google's cause at all.

CarPlay isn't an operating system built into cars. It doesn't run the Apple iOS software nor does it power Apple iOS applications.

So what is it then?

According to Tech Radar, Apple CarPlay is a different kind of system designed to integrate the existing iOS apps a user has on his or her iPhone with a vehicle's digital media systems. As a result, users can control not only the apps in the phone, but the device itself a lot more easily. This also provides them with a higher level of convenience.

Since the system enables users to access various iPhone functionalities without their having the need to touch their phones, users can focus on driving safely.

CarPlay works by connecting and integrating an iPhone to a head unit. The head unit should be compatible and touchscreen-enabled. Once a connection has been established, the head unit will run iOS with all of the icons in it.

Furthermore, Siri support is also available. Aside from giving car owners access to a much bigger interface and control unit, their iPhones will also be charged along the way, thanks to the USB cable included with the system.

This means users don't have to worry about losing power even if their vehicles are accessing the programs installed in it.
