Aereo Allowed To Auction Off Assets, After Bankruptcy

Streaming service Aereo has been granted permission to sell its assets, after filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy earlier this year.

Aereo allowed internet users to watch a variety of cable programs, without having to pay for the installation or subscription charge. Aereo argued it was simply providing installation materials, but in August the Supreme Court voted 6 to 3 to ban the service, claiming it violated the Copyright Act.

After the Supreme Court made its decision, Aereo had few options, and even tried to become a cable company.

This did not work out however, after a Judge in October allowed broadcasters the right to refuse to offer live broadcasting to Aereo. CBS, NBC, ABC and Fox were all part of the move to block Aereo from live broadcasting.

Aereo will be able to sell of its streaming and technology patent assets to other companies, but any new startup thinking of trying to remake Aereo will face the same fate in court.

The fact Aereo tried to make an internet service with cable providers has been enough to bring broadcasters like CBS and HBO to the table, both working on their own streaming services for internet-only users.

It has also brought up serious questions about internet and cable broadcasting, and the legality of refusing to offer broadcasting to certain networks, because of the platform the company uses.

Aereo's CEO wrote an open letter on the future of the service and the team behind it, adding what will happen in the future.
