The sudden snowfall that created whiteout condition and over speeding cars caused two separate pileups involving 35 cars on Friday, before 10 a.m., at Interstate I-93 in New Hampshire.

Some of the road travelers were hurt by the vehicular collisions, but there were no life-threatening injuries, said Lt. Jerry Maslan, the New Hampshire police spokesman, reports Newsday.

They were brought to the Franklin Regional Hospital and Speare Memorial Hospital for treatment. Two were eventually moved to Darthmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center.

There were conflicting reports on the number of injured, with Newsday placing it at nine people, while My Champlain Valley give a higher figure of 12.

Due to the clear conditions just before the snowfall, many cars were exceeding the 75 mph speed limit, said Al Poulin, fire chief of the Manchester District. Some appear to be headed for ski resorts for the first weekend of 2015.

However, it took only three minutes of snow squall to change the landscape from dry roads to whiteout, according to Bill Boynton, spokesman of the Department of Transportation. Drivers had a difficult time seeing what lies ahead, which led to the collisions.

A car went underneath a truck trailer and caught fire as well as scattered the boxes from the truck to the smashed vehicles beside it. It took authorities more than three hours to restore traffic to normal.

During those three hours, the roads were closed, while tow trucks cleared the highway of damaged cars.

Prior to the 35-car smash-up, several vehicles also either went off the road or collided on Interstate 89 in Grantham, although there were no injuries.
