Former National Football League (NFL) defensive lineman for the Dallas Cowboys Josh Brent has been released from jail and sent to a rehabilitation facility to serve 45 days for the treatment of substance abuse before being released.

Brent, along with teammate Jerry Brown Jr., went drinking in a private club in December of 2012. He was driving his Mercedes at 110 mph and under the influence of alcohol, he slammed his car into a curb which caused it to flip over and set afire, eventually killing Brown.

In January, a jury in Dallas, Texas found Brent guilty of intoxication manslaughter and sentenced him to six months in prison followed by 10 years probation. Brent's mother pleaded for leniency.

Brent, 26, was put to leave by the Cowboys soon after the accident and was retired from the team in July of last year. He received $630,000 for the final year of his NFL contract. He had been working in a Dallas warehouse ever since, packing boxes before his jail sentence.

Joshua Aaron Price-Brent was born in California but grew up in Bloomington, Illinois where he attended Central Catholic High School. In college, he went to the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign where he played for three years before entering the 2010 NFL supplemental draft and was eventually taken in the seventh round by the Dallas Cowboys. The Cowboys has not drafted any player since 1995.

The day after the accident, the Cowboys flew to Cincinnati for their match against heavily favored Bengals. Without 5 of its starting defensive team, the Cowboys shocked the Bengals, winning the game 20-19 come from behind victory.

Reports said that there are speculations of having the 320 lb. Brent back with the Dallas roster.

Cowboys' owner Jerry Jones said "We'll certainly evaluate the situation when it comes. I certainly wouldn't rule it out."
