The man who took a hostage on Saturday night at the Tomball Regional Medical Center at 605 Holderrieth Boulevard in Harris County, Texas, surrendered peacefully after four hours.

He barricaded his hostage, who could actually be a family member, inside the room of his son. The man was distraught over the medical condition of his son who was in intensive care, said James Harral, detective of the Tomball Police Department, reports Chron.com.

Harral said the hostage-taker has not made any demand or threats. But nevertheless, the hospital evacuated areas near the room where the hostage-taking was, not the entire medical center.

The Harris County Sheriff's Office sent a hostage negotiator from its High Risk Operations Unit to the hospital. Also in the center were more than a dozen cops from the Tomball Police Department.

The man surrendered at 10:45 p.m. and turned out to have no weapon. Although he was taken in custody, it is not clear if he would be charged.

Lt. Joe Ambriz, spokesman of the Harris County Sheriff's Office, said, "Whenever you have a situation like this end peacefully, it's always a relief."

The hospital, which has 385 beds, including those in the ICUs, was opened in 1976. It has specialty centers such as a cancer treatment center.

Visitors with relatives confined in the hospital were temporarily not allowed to enter the facility until the man surrendered. One visitor, Lauren Stucky, told Chron.com, "It's a scary situation because I have a family member in there and I can't see them. It's a little stressful because no one really can tell us what's going on, but I'm hoping it's resolved soon for everyone's sake."
