A new study reveals eating almonds can help burn away belly fat and protect the heart from cardiovascular diseases.

Researchers from Pennsylvania State University found that consuming about 42 grams of almonds daily can lead to higher levels of low-density lipoproteins and total cholesterol that can ultimately result in smaller waistlines and lesser leg cellulite.

The study was conducted among 52 middle aged participants who are all overweight; possessed high LDL and total cholesterol levels in their bodies. They were then asked to follow a diet to lower their cholesterol levels. The diet included snacks of banana muffins or whole almonds in equal amounts of calories.

The results showed that those who ate almonds as snacks produced a significant decrease in cholesterol levels. Apart from these positive results, those who ate almonds had significant fat mass reductions, specifically in their abdominal area in which belly fat has been linked to risk of heart diseases.

This research discovered that when high carbohydrate snacks are substituted with almonds, this can lessen health risk factors and also reduce belly fat, according to the study's lead researcher, Claire Berryman.

Almonds have long been linked to healthy heart levels, a finding also confirmed by researchers from Aston University in the U.K. Researchers found adding almonds to a daily diet can improve blood stream levels and lower blood pressure.

Almonds are also considered one of the world's healthiest foods as they contain nutrients like minerals, fiber and essential vitamins. They're also great sources of folic acid that aid in the development of healthy cells and also improve skin health and lower blood sugar.
