Man Comes Up With Absurd Way Of Smuggling 94 iPhones Into China

A man who thought he could illegally sneak 94 iPhones into China came up with an absurd way of doing so, but Chinese authorities easily busted his attempt, which fast became the butt of jokes across the Internet.

Underground sellers of smuggled iPhone 6 and iPhone 6+ models are rampant in China, with one unit reportedly fetching a price beyond US$2,400. Custom officials are constantly on the prowl for individuals who every now and then come up with very creative ways to illegally bring in the devices into China, according to CNET.

One man apparently thought he could fool Chinese custom officials at the Futian Port with his less-than-clever idea of illegally transporting iPhones into the country. But the authorities were quick to notice that the man had a very awkward posture and strange way of walking, China-based media agency Sina News said.

Upon inspection, the man's hand-carried luggage passed but he did not. The metal detector tipped him off and the authorities immediately knew something was going on, the report said.

On closer inspection, the authorities discovered that the man had worn all 94 iPhones all over his body like a body armor. Each phone was enclosed in a plastic wrapper and were taped around his legs and torso.

Sina News published several photos of the smuggler's absurd attempt of getting the iPhone through Chinese customs. The images showed him looking like a gladiator with an armor made of iPhones, including a loincloth fashioned out of the gadget.

With each iPhone 6 weighing 4.6 ounces, the busted smuggler would have been trudging around with almost 30 lbs. of gadgets, seriously impeding his gait and posture.

Authorities still have not confirmed the source of the smuggled iPhones, the report added.

Futian Port is the entry point between mainland China and Hong Kong.
