Xbox One Maintains Number One Spot in Console Sales for December

(Photo : Reuters) Microsoft has confirmed the Xbox One sold more units in December than the PS4 and Wii U, keeping hold of the top console spot for two months in a row.

Microsoft has claimed a second month at the top of the U.S. console charts, following its first win over Sony's PS4 in Nov. 2014. The Xbox One managed to secure Dec. 2014 as well, following a second price cut to $349.

The results came a few hours ahead of NPD's official announcement on console sales, showing Microsoft is either confident in its numbers or pushing a big win before a fall.

"Weekly average sales during these months outpaced Xbox 360 by 50 percent at the same point in its lifecycle," Microsoft said in a press release statement.

The numbers are only for the U.S., in Europe Sony continues to reign supreme. Sony also has 18.5 million consoles sold overall, compared to Microsoft's 10 million sales. Microsoft has changed its mind on the holiday season promotion, confirming it will drop the sales price to $349 going forward. The price drop is the second, following the removal of the Kinect and $100 price drop to $399.

The $349 price-tag makes the Xbox One competitive with the PS4, whereas when the price was $499 or even $399, Microsoft was not making much in the way of sales.

Even though Microsoft is seeing large gains throughout the holiday season, 71 percent of hardware sales in December came with bundled software and games. Gamestop and other console sellers bundled up to six games at aggressive price points for customers.

Despite these large game bundles, the actual amount of games per user is low on both Xbox One and PS4 at 4 games per console. Nintendo's Wii U did not fare any better, showing the lack of core titles in 2014 for the current-gen.

This year looks to be a better year when it comes to video games in general, with blockbuster titles like The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, Evolve, Tom Clancy's The Division and No Man's Sky all coming next year for the PS4 and Xbox One.

Even Nintendo is getting a few big exclusives in 2015, including Mario Maker, The Legend of Zelda, Mario Party 10 and Kirby and the Rainbow Curse, which should get fans of the various characters excited.
