San Diego Reliever Alex Torres Sports MLB-Approved Protective Cap

San Diego reliever Alex Torres sported the first-ever protective cap during last Saturday's game that left the pitcher's mound a sight unlike any other.

Torres wore the noticeable cap during their game against the Los Angeles Dodgers that resulted in a 4-2 loss from two strikeouts plus a run after two walks and a single.

Reports have surfaced that Torres, 26, ordered the protective cap within the month and started using it for the past week. The Major League Baseball approval of the said protective cap was back in January during the off-season yet in the months that passed it was only Torres wore it for the first time.

There were plenty of speculation on how the approved protective cap holds up during play, especially since Brandon McCarthy, pitcher for the Arizona Diamondbacks, had been vocal that he is not satisfied. In 2012, McCarthy underwent surgery after suffering from a hit on the head while pitching for the Oakland Athletics. After the approval of the protective cap in January, McCarthy was hopeful that it could be worn while in play.

Now, McCarthy seems to be less pleased with the protective cap. He said that it is too itchy, too hot and too big. Despite McCarthy's negative feedback, it seems that Torres could not care less as he wore the protective cap with front and side padding as he pitched last Saturday his 74th MLB appearance up to date.
