Microsoft DirectX 12 May Bring Profound Changes To Games

Microsoft has already implemented DirectX 12 into Xbox One, but the launch of new features could have a profound impact on video game graphics and performance.

Microsoft has not given much on the topic of DirectX 12; Xbox chief Phil Spencer went over the new APIs coming in 2015, but some developers were worried about Microsoft's silence.

It looks like it is just taking longer than expected to bring DirectX 12 to the market, but even before it launches on the PC, Spencer is trying to shut down hype by claiming the difference in graphical fidelity and performance will "vary on a game-by-game basis".

This goes against early tests by developers, however, who claim the volume of new APIs in temporal aliasing, object space rendering and light sources are much more advanced from DirectX 11.

Brad Wardell published an extensive report on the differences between DirectX 11 and 12, showing some of the more profound changes Microsoft is bringing to gaming.

New graphical APIs could boost performance on Xbox One and PS4, both currently incapable of running games at 1080p 60fps without seeing issues. DirectX 12 and Mantle could bring much better performance.

DirectX 12 will launch with Windows 10 later in the year, but Phil Spencer claims some Xbox One games already utilize the new power of the APIs. The capabilities on PC may be even more far reaching due to the openness of the platform.

2014 was full of video games incapable of running on the best computers at a decent framerate, leading consumers to believe either the developer was simply lazy and overzealous with certain aspects, or DirectX 11 and other APIs were ageing.

Hopefully in 2015, with the new APIs and focus on core gameplay rather than large spectacle, we might see a push for better performance, frame-rate and graphical fidelity.
