After expressing his love for her and sending a marriage proposal, Aslam was rejected by Sidra's family saying that he was harassing her and threatening her parents with dire consequences if he was not allowed to see her.

Aslam was later arrested and charged after the victim's father, Shaukat Ali, confirmed the murder of her daughter.

Pakistan police state that prior to this case, a prior brutal killing was also filed in the same area.

A newly-married 17-year-old girl and her husband were killed by their relatives for marrying without their consent. Maafia Bibi and her 31-year-old husband Muhammad Sajjad were tied up before their throats were slit by the girl's father.

The suspected "honor killing" took place on Thursday at the couple's home in the village of Satrah in the province of Punjab.

Honor killings of this sort often originate from tribal traditions in Pakistan where victims are women whose behavior are seen as immodest such as singing, looking out of a window or talking to a man who is not a relative. Authorities do not interfere with these kinds of cases because they are considered to be family matters.
