British tech firm OwnFone Ltd. has launched a Kickstarter campaign to raise US$304,670 (£200,000) by this March to launch its new product called OwnFone.

OwnFone, a company established in 2012, is known for developing its OwnFone Braille, a mobile phone for the visually impaired.

The new product will be a mobile phone that can be customized and 2D/3D printed either at home or by the company. It comes with 2D and 3D printable kits called the "PrintFone Development Kit".

"While the circuit board is not printed - we think this is the closest anyone has come to 3D printing a mobile phone and the whole exterior and functional details are printed in a single print run," Thomas Sunderland, OwnFone's founder and CEO, told 3DPrint.com.

"The process that we have developed effectively encases the phone's circuit board in printed material."

Users will have the ability to design their custom phones online using a web or mobile app. They can choose custom designs for the face plate, including the case which encloses all the internal parts.

The development kit comes with internal components for the phone and comes with a 3D printer filament and software.

"With the Kit anyone with a desktop PLA 3D printer can start experimenting with printing their own phones and this freedom means we don't know what people are going to make, but it's sure to be interesting," said Sunderland.
