"BattleBots' Makes its Return to TV; ABC Revamps the Sport of Robot Combat

(Photo : IGN) ABC plans to revamp the series and focus more on the designing and building elements required to construct these remote-controlled killer robot beasts.

It's been twelve years since BattleBots last aired a new episode on national television, but robot enthusiasts can rejoice as ABC announced that it would be rebooting the show and will imaginatively rethink the way BattleBots is portrayed.

BattleBots showed competitions of several remote-controlled armored machines with weapons ranging from spinning saws to penetrating drills. Users must control their killer robot around the caged arena and battle it out until there's only one machine left operational.

While the TV series showed advanced technical robotics for its time, the concept of the show was portrayed as comedy as BattleBots aired on Comedy Central for its duration of five seasons. The competition was hosted by comedian Bil Dwyer and announced by longtime boxing announcer Mark Beiro.

ABC plans to revamp the series and stray away from the comedy side of the battles and focus more on the designing and building elements required to construct these remote-controlled killer robot beasts.

"Like the original, the new series will feature homemade robots battling against each other in a single-elimination, tournament-style format, until there is one champion," Deadline reports.

With the recent uprise of reality television, ABC will also be showing emphasis on the background stories of participants and their quest for the ultimate goal of becoming BattleBot champions.

Most interestingly is the fact that BattleBots will be coming back over a decade later when robotics is more advanced than ever before. Prepare for next-generation technological advancements with robots that are "bigger, faster and stronger than ever before."

The series is expected to air sometime this summer and will run a trial period of six episodes.
