New England and New York woke up to a familiar scene Monday - freezing rain, slushy roads and slippery morning commute.  Another winter storm barreled parts of the east coast, three Mondays in a row.

The winter storm dumped more than 2 feet of snow in some parts of New England, breaking records set nearly four decades ago. Forecasters have warned the situation may get worse later in the week.

The National Weather Service reports Boston was hardest hit. 2,600 flights were canceled and area subways, trolleys, and trains had shut down early Monday night.

The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) said public transport had to halt operations to clear snow and ice from tracks and to assess the damage to equipment.

The snow buildup caused a train to stall between stations in Quincy, south of Boston.  About 50 passengers were evacuated.

Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker called the situation "unacceptable."

"This storm marks our third major snowstorm we have experienced in nearly two weeks," Baker said.

Boston Mayor Marty Walsh couldn't hide his frustration as Boston gets buried again.

"I'm frustrated. The last thing I want to be talking about is another 24 inches of snow. I want to move on to something else," Walsh said.

Conditions were less frustrating in New York.  Schools and municipal offices were closed and parking bans took effect.

At 200 flights were canceled at LaGuardia, 100 at Kennedy, and a hundred more at Newark.

The Department of Environmental Protection said they are aware of the challenges involved in getting rid of the snow.

Local communities are mulling to take steps that will allow disposal of snow in the ocean or other bodies of water - a move that is normally prohibited but could be beneficial.
