Cinderella, Not a Damsel in Distress in New Trailer

In the new Cinderella trailer that Disney Pictures just released, it seems like Cinderella does not anymore rely on Prince Charming to do all the saving. Cinderella, who is played by Lily James boldly answers back to her stepmother Lady Tremaine and says, "I will protect the prince from you no matter what becomes of me."

The live-action movie is still four weeks away, but Disney is releasing plenty of sneak peeks of the film through their trailers.

The trailer shows Cinderella meeting Richard Madden's character, Prince Charming for the first time. And unlike in the books, it does not happen in the castle. While Prince Charming is out hunting, he accidentally runs into Cinderella and introduces himself as Kit, a palace employee instead of the prince.

Cinderella, who despises hunting, bravely confronts the Prince and tells him, "Just because it's what's done doesn't mean it should be done." However, instead of getting insulted, the prince is charmed by Cinderella, not only because of her beauty but also because of her kind heart and opinionated views. Before they part ways, the prince says, "I hope to see you again, miss."

A little later in the trailer, Cinderella's evil stepmother, Lady Tremaine is introduced. Lady Tremaine, played by Cate Blanchett, will do whatever it takes to put her two daughters on the throne and does not care what happens to Cinderella, as long as she achieves her ambitions. So when she finds out that the Prince has fallen for Cinderella, she becomes more ruthless and brutal.

Disney's new approach on the classic tale shows various twists and plots. In the new movie, Cinderella is no weakling. Not only is she set on saving herself, but she is also set on saving the Prince from her devious family. In a surprising turn, the King, Prince Charming's father even sides with Lady Tremaine just to make sure that the prince does not marry Cinderella.

While Cinderella seems to be brave enough herself to fight off those who are against her and the prince, she still gets the help of her fairy godmother portrayed by Helena Bonham Carter.

The film, which is directed by Kenneth Branagh, will be shown in theatres March 13.
