Canadian authorities said they have thwarted an alleged plot to conduct massive killings in the Halifax area on Saturday, Valentine's day.

Nova Scotia police said they received a tip from concerned citizens that two suspects - a man and a woman, had planned to go to a public place in its capital Halifax, and conduct mass shooting of civilians before killing themselves.

Asst. Commissioner Brian Brennan disclosed that the man was a 19-year-old from Halifax, and the woman, aged 23, was from Geneva, Illinois.

"Given the public venue that we believe was to be targeted, there was the potential for significant casualties and injury to citizens," Brennan said while refusing to reveal what particular place was being targeted.

The 19-year-old suspect had been found dead in his home past 1 a.m. Friday.  About half an hour later, the 23-year old woman was arrested at the Halifax airport.

Brennan said two other male suspects, ages 20 and 17, may be involved. The 20-year-old suspect was arrested after meeting the female suspect at the airport, while the 17-year old was nabbed in the Halifax area.  All three are in police custody.

Brennan said firearms were seized from the three suspects, but could not say how many or what kind.  But he was also quick to add, "The weapons seized had the ability to inflict a lot of casualties if used in a populated area."

Authorities still could not say if the alleged plot was an act of terrorism, saying the plot was not influenced by religion or culture.

Brennan assured there are no further threat against public safety in the area, saying all suspects have been detained.

Federal Public Safety Minister, meanwhile, praised police efforts in thwarting a possible large number of casualties.

"These arrests are a great example of the fine work they do on a daily basis to help keep Canadians safe," he said in a statement on Friday.

Nova Scotia Premier Stephen McNeil also commended the police saying he is grateful for their dedication and vigilance.
