Massive fireworks display and promotion of military officers marked the 73rd birthday celebration of North Korea's late ruler Kim Jong-il.

Fireworks lit up Pyongyang skies Sunday night to celebrate what they call the "Day of the Shining Star"

Dozens of high-ranking military officials received promotions as part of the celebrations.  North Korean leader Kim Jong-un visited his father's mausoleum, where the embalmed body of Kim Jong-il is placed.

Thousands of senior military officials gathered in an auditorium in Pyongyang to show loyalty to the Kim dynasty.

The birthday of Kim Jong-il and the death anniversary of his father, North Korea's founding leader Kim Il-sung, are considered the country's major holidays.

But a U.S.-based human rights group said Kim Jong-il must be remembered not for his heroic acts but for leading one of the world's most brutal and repressive governments.

During Kim Jong-il's regime, the country suffered famine and was accused of crimes against humanity.  In 2004, political prisoners in North Korea reached 200,000, describing the country as among the world's most repressive governments.

Kim's 17-year rule ended when he died in December 2011.  He was succeeded by his third son Kim Jong-un.

In a meeting at the auditorium, Kim's closest aide, Choe Ryong-Hae, reminded all officials to guard the young leader Kim Jong-un.  Choe also urged the people to follow the footsteps of Kim's father.

Banners that read:  "The great leader Kim Jong-il is always with us" are seen posted in the auditorium.

The Kim dynasty has ruled over North Korea for nearly seven decades.
