In what people considered as a miracle, a Santa Clara University student survived with multiple stab wounds and cuts in his forehead and shoulder in an attack perpetrated by his roommate.

The police said the 19-year-old university student, whose name has not been disclosed, is expected to recover despite the stab wounds he sustained.

The suspect, 19-year-old Dillion Sang Kim, was arrested by the police just as he was about to cut himself.

Prosecutors said Kim stabbed the victim in the throat, slashed his forehead and chased him to continue the attack when the victim managed to get out of the room looking for help.

Police said the attack was unprovoked and the victim was sleeping when Kim attempted to kill his roommate last Tuesday.

The victim told the police that he awoke early Tuesday to find Kim, who was holding a knife, standing over him.

Deputy District Attorney Kalila Spain said the suspect suddenly stabbed the victim multiple times then cut his forehead and shoulder.

The victim, however, managed to break free and made a run toward a bathroom that connects to an adjoining room.

Kim, determined to kill the victim, chased his roommate and stabbed him in the back when the victim fell down.

Another student immediately called 911.

The suspect was arrested outside the dorm as he also tried to cut his neck. His mug shot showed a knife wound wrapping around his neck with stitches.

Kim has been charged with attempted murder but did not enter a plea in court. He is being held without bail.

Kim's lawyer, Attorney Emma Bradford, did not immediately give a comment last Friday.

Santa Clara University spokeswoman Deepa Arora said Kim has been suspended from the university.
