Game of Thrones-Themed Wines: Thirst-Quenchers in Time for Season 5

The Wines of Westeros have arrived thanks to a recent fan-made project by strategic and creative agency Common Ventures.

Rooted on the major houses and family groups in George R.R. Martin's book and TV series, the wine range has 12 distinct wines from Australia.

According Jane Burhop, Common Ventures spokesperson, the wines can be roughly classified into two -- the reds and the whites. While the reds are for the tough and willful houses, the whites represent the families who are more cunning and cautious.

Sharp and warm Sauvignon blancs are ideal for the Arryns, Starks, and Greyjoys as well as for the Wildlings and the White Walkers. Pinot noirs best represent the Lannister and Baratheon Houses. The Tyrells come in a chardonnay whereas cabernet Sauvignon will stand for the Martell family.

Sharing similar attributes, House Targaryen and the Night's Watch correspond to smoky Shiraz; the formidable Dothrakis come in Merlot to remind the show's enthusiasts of a brutal finish.

Burhop appeals to the devoted fan base of the HBO fantasy show as she spoke about how the wines can be consumed to cope with the episodes, especially with upsetting and startling scenes.

The Wines of Westeros will roughly cost US$20 per bottle and will be made available in 2015 in time for the premiere of the show's highly anticipated fifth season.

Other collections that have taken on a Game of Thrones theme include board games, cookbooks, figurines, and apparel, to name a few.

Approximately 18.6 million viewers in the U.S. alone watched the finale of Game of Thrones season 4. Last April, the show had been renewed for seasons five and six.

Aside from Game of Thrones, other pop culture trends that have inspired various drinks include Downton Abbey and Fifty Shades of Gray.
