MUSE Reveals Amazing 3D View of the Deep Universe for the First Time

The most comprehensive and detailed 3D view of the universe has just been released by the European Southern Observatory's MUSE (Multi-Unit Spectroscopic Explorer) instrument that provided astronomers and scientists alike the chance to study and observe the cosmos more quickly.

This isn't the first attempt where scientists wanted to map better views of the universe. Back in 1995, NASA's Hubble Space Telescope captured spectacular images of the cosmos and made a huge impact to the rest of the world.

Astronomers are now filling in the gaps as they carefully examine each image and then compare them to other instruments, a challenging and time consuming job. Now, for the first time ever, MUSE can accomplish two jobs at once and present unprecedented views of the universe.

Roland Bacon, the principal investigator for the MUSE instrument, said it was very encouraging for the team to take just a few hours of observations from the telescope. The data provided a quick look at many galaxies in just a short amount of time.

In a short amount of time, about 27 hours to be exact, the team received data about the distances, motion and other properties of more galaxies never before seen in the cosmos, specifically in the Hubble Deep Field South (HDF-S) region located in the southern sky.

This major breakthrough presents images that also show a spectrum of wavelengths revealing the intensity of light in different component colors or 90,000 spectra in total.

With this method, the research team measured the distances between 189 galaxies. Some of these are relatively close to one another while others were even so ancient these old galaxies are almost the same age as the universe in its first one billion years in existence.

Bacon said the greatest achievement of MUSE was the discovery of really distant galaxies not even visible on the deepest Hubble image.

After many years of hard work with the instrument, the team finally achieved their dream of mapping a universe so detailed it's a first in the history of space observation.

This study was published in the journal Astronomy & Astrophysics.
