IKEA Launching Wireless Charging Furniture

Swedish furniture maker IKEA has announced new wireless charging integration will arrive on a variety of products in the near future, featuring charging areas on the furniture.

It follows a surge in the number of smart home devices integrating normal products inside a house with cloud and software technologies, making them smarter and more efficient.

Using the Qi standard wireless charging, IKEA will import wireless chargers onto bedside tables, lamps and desks, allowing owners to charge from anywhere.

IKEA will also apparently offer its own wireless chargers in-case people do not want to swap furniture for the charging. We expect -- since its IKEA -- for there to be instructions on how to dismantle furniture and add the wireless charger onto a desk.

"Our belief is that mobile phones are vital parts to people's lives at home and their desire to stay connected, and Qi addresses an unmet need to keep devices powered," said Bjorn Block, IKEA range manager, in a statement. "As a member of the Wireless Power Consortium, we value the access to the leading and most advanced global standard for wireless charging."

The smart home growth in 2013 and 2014 was immense, especially when it comes to integration with 'Works with Nest' and 'HomeKit' platforms. There is a worry other platforms made by Qualcomm, Intel, Samsung and other providers will overwhelm users who are unsure what device will be compatible with all smart home products.

Samsung recently announced wireless charging would be available on the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge. Other providers like HTC and Apple seem hesitant to introduce the technology.

Even though wireless charging has its benefits, the question is how many people will use the new technology to charge the device, and is the adoption rate high enough to pay for the costs of adding the feature. Samsung and IKEA believe so.
