In 2014, "Rise of the Tomb Raider" developer Crystal Dynamics and Microsoft announced the upcoming game will be an Xbox exclusive.

The news angered PlayStation owners who made their feelings known on online blogs and forums. Crystal Dynamics and Microsoft later clarified the exclusivity isn't a permanent one and will lapse after a period of time.

The explanation resulted in confusion within the gaming community since Crystal Dynamics didn't mention any specific date about when the exclusivity period will expire. It's widely believed the developer will release the Xbox version late 2015.

Crystal Dynamics, however, wouldn't comment on when a PC or PS4 version will come out, or if they're even considering releasing either version.

In a recent interview, Crystal Dynamics head Darrell Gallagher explained the reasons why his company decided to exclude the PlayStation game console and PC and instead release it solely on the Xbox game consoles.

Gallagher claimed their partnership with Xbox didn't start out of the blue but was a long one that started in 2008.  He added that Xbox owner Microsoft will help his company promote, market and distribute Rise of the Tomb Raider.

Gallagher was then asked if Rise of the Tomb Raider wouldn't be possible without the support of Microsoft.  He replied, "I wouldn't say that."

He explained that the game franchise has been in existence for 20 years and would likely stay on even without support from the Windows maker.

He also mentioned in the interview that the Rise of the Tomb Raider will eventually be released on the PS4 or PS3. Unfortunately, he wouldn't give an exact date.  He said that for now, they're focusing on releasing the game on the Xbox game platform this year.
