Man Survives Seizure Mid-air While Skydiving

A skydiver suffered a seizure while in mid-air, but was miraculously saved by his instructor who flew in and helped him out.

Christopher Jones is a 22-year old from Perth who enjoys skydiving. He also has epilepsy.

The combination would turn out to be a potentially fatal one as he jumped from a plane from 12,000 feet over Western Australia.

When he reached 9,000 feet while trying a left-hand turn during his accelerated free fall training, Jones' epilepsy kicked in. He began convulsing.

Jones stated in a description to the skydiver's epileptic skydiving video that he spent the next 30 seconds in free fall unconscious.

He thanked his jumpmaster, who had managed to pull his ripcord around 4000 feet. As 1000 more feet passed, he regained consciousness and landed safely back on the ground.

Footage was taken of his unconscious descent via a helmet-mounted camera. While it was only two minutes long, it has already garnered 3.7 million views by mid-morning Monday.

The footage was also able to record the jumpmaster, Sheldon McFarlane in action.

In a report with abc.net.au, Robin O'Neill - business manager and chief instructor of WA Skydiving Academy - said that halfway through the dive, Jones had a seizure and rolled onto his back.

McFarlane then swooped in, grabbed Jones briefly and pulled his ripcord.

"The guy came to consciousness under the canopy well before he landed," O'Neill said. "He landed uneventfully. It was a controlled landing in the Pinjarra drop zone."

O'Neill said that Jones' treating specialist wrote a letter saying that he was fit to skydive, which he obviously was not. He adds that this marks the end of Jones' skydiving carer.

Initially, Jones wanted to be a pilot, but also could not due to his epilepsy. He thought his conditioned had improved enough for him to skydive though as he was seizure-free for four years.
