Jury Finds Lacey Spears Guilty For Salt Poisoning Son

It took the jury two-and-a-half days to finally reach a guilty verdict for the 27-year-old mother accused of murdering her son by force-feeding him with lethal dose of salt.

On Monday, a New York jury found Lacey Spears guilty of second-degree depraved murder for the death of Garnett Paul Spears.

She will be sentenced on April 8th and  may face a maximum prison time of 25 years to life.

Spears showed little emotion as the verdict was read.

Her father and sister held each other and wept upon hearing the guilty verdict.

Spears was taken out of the courtroom, handcuffed.

Defense lawyer Stephen Riebling said Spears was shocked upon hearing the verdict.  Her team is bent on making an appeal.

"We are disappointed with the verdict that was rendered in this case," Riebling said. "It is our client's intention to appeal the decision."

Deciding on Spears' case was not an easy feat for the New York jury. One juror said finding her guilty was not an instant decision.

"Nothing was done right away - we had that woman's life in our hands," said juror Michael Brown of Mount Vernon. "There was a lot of discussion. Nobody came in saying she's guilty... She was innocent to me until the end."

Brown said the testimony of a medical examiner, who claimed Garnett was salt poisoned, convinced him of Spears' guilt.

Before deliberations, the jury reviewed a surveillance hospital room video showing Spears taking Garnett into the bathroom with a feeding tube.

Shortly after coming out from the bathroom, Garnett seemed to be suffering and feeling sick.

For the jury, it was quite unimaginable for Garnett to be voluntarily taking in huge amounts of salt.

"The kid couldn't force it himself," Brown said. "Have you ever tried swallowing salt water? You can't swallow it. You spit it out."

Brown said the prosecution did a good job of proving Spears' guilt using all the pieces of evidence they had.

Shortly after the verdict was read the prosecution praised the jury for paying attention to all the pieces of evidence they've presented.

Westchester County District Attorney Janet DiFiore said they are confident the decision will be upheld.

During the 14-day trial, the defense portrayed Spears as a caring mother being tried on weak evidence.

The lawyers argued it was hospital's negligence that caused Garnett's death on January 23, 2014.

But prosecutors countered, saying nothing could explain the high sodium content that caused Garnett's death other than salt poisoning.

Prosecutors said Spears enjoyed the attention she was getting from sickening her child.

Spears had documented the deteriorating health of her son through Facebook.

Witnesses said she even scrambled to take snapshots of Garnett on his death bed to post on the social networking site - an act that troubled many.

For many who knew the Spears family, the verdict provides closure to an agonizing chapter of their lives.
