For the second time in the seven-year trial of Jodi Arias, the jury was deadlocked again, removing the possibility of a death sentence for the murder in 2013 of her lover Travis Alexander.

Because of the hung jury over the punishment to be given, the judge declared a mistrial and will sentence Arias to life imprisonment, or a life term with the possibility of release after 25 years, reports Fox.

After 26.5 hours deliberation by the jury, spread over five days, it was still an impasse, although the judge rejected a request to declare a mistrial.

Arias, who initially denied she killed Alexander, later admitted to the murder.

However, she claimed self-defense because he allegedly attacked her.

Friends of the victim found Alexander in his Phoenix apartment five days after Arias stabbed and slashed him 30 times.

She cut his throat very deeply that his head was almost decapitated. She also shot him on the forehead. Arias left his corpse in the shower.

Prosecutors said that Arias planned the murder because she was jealous since Alexander wanted to end their relationship and planned to go to Mexico with another woman.

Defense lawyer Kirk Nurmi asked the jurors to give Arias a second chance since she was allegedly a victim of physical and verbal abuse throughout her life.

However, he also admitted there were happy moments between the ex-lovers.

Nurmi attributed Arias's problems to her personality disorder that results in her trying to fit into the mold to what men she dated wanted.

He added that Alexander was torn between his membership in the Mormon Church and sexual desires that resulted in him having several relationships with women, the Sacramento Bee reports.

In her first conviction for murder, Arias told Fox that she prefers the death penalty, which she considers the ultimate freedom.
